Our Recommendation
Single U or Hoop Type. These are becoming very common and are simple, strong, hold the bicycle well and are easy to lock up to. They are especially good for single mid block type installations where due to the size and height the are very visible and would not create a tripping hazard. Multiple U racks can be set up in rows to hold large quantities of bicycles
Creative Pipe Lighting Rack LR Series. This is a clever rack, which holds the bicycle in three places, holds the bike very securely and allows locking both the front tire and the frame with a single U lock. This rack would be good in bicycle parking areas where there is a need to park many bicycles in a limited space. The design ensures the bicycles are neatly parked with a minimum of space. This rack might not be good for single mid block installations where its lower height might create a tripping hazard.
Any rack, which holds the bicycle by only a wheel, is not recommended. This is a common older design where a wheel fits through two bars. These do not hold the bicycle securely, are hard to lock to and can lead to damage to the wheel or the bicycle.

Bike Racks: Types, Description, Sources and Evaluations
Single U or Hoop Type Racks: These racks are shaped likes an inverted U with the ends of the U connected to the ground. They are around 35" tall and 18-35" wide. They hold two bikes mounted parallel to the U of the rack. These are a very common rack for use on sidewalks, many times individually mounted between parking meters. Groups of these can also be installed in a row to provide parking multiple bicycles. These racks hold all styles of bikes and allow using a U lock or chain or cable and with the appropriate lock can allow locking both wheels with out removing a wheel
Sources and Manufactures:
Wave Type Racks. These hold numerous bikes in a single rack of multiple U shaped bends. The bike is mounted perpendicular to the rack (not parallel like the single U) so the bike is only held in one spot. The rack is common in specific bicycle parking area and provides for a single simple one piece rack to hold numerous bikes. Due to the bike being held at only one spot, loaded bikes and odd shaped bikes can had some difficulty being held properly.

This rack is used at. San Jose's City Hall and are also all over the Stanford, Davis, and Cal Campus'. Sometimes as much as six hundred spots in a location.
Some of the advantages include:
One tipped bike does not take a whole bank down,
Paint, derailers, wheels, etc are not scratched or bent when a bike blows
over.
Any kind of bike, rack fenders, recumbent etc, could be easily,
securely, and quickly locked.
There is expectation and capacity to hold a huge number of bikes.
Bikes are parked very neatly and the racks are easy to use.
They also come in a back to back configuration to double up on the capacity.
Single Wheel Racks. A very common older design bike rack holds the bike only by a single wheel usually the front wheel. While common there are numerous disadvantages to this style. These disadvantages include
Do not hold the bicycle securely and bikes tend to fall over damaging the bike as well as other bikes. Tipped over bikes also make it difficult to fit other bikes on the rack.
Difficult or impossible to properly lock up a bike to this rack. A U lock can only lock a single wheel to the rack and additional locks are required to secure the frame.
Do not hold bicycles with narrow tires well and can easily led to wheel bending or damage.
Racks, which only hold a bicycle by a single wheel, are not recommended.
